The Story Continues

RWL Show #2.

Canonically taking place the day after Entertainmania, Death By Diamond Cutter continued RWL’s newly recorded era with another show from the original backyard days.

In reality, both events were recorded on the same day. Within RWL continuity, however, Death By Diamond Cutter took place the following day, allowing the events of Entertainmania to feed directly into the stories and matches of RWL’s second show.

Making the Most of What We Had

With the first two recorded RWL shows put together at extremely short notice, wrestler turnout was limited. There was, however, a borrowed Mini-DV camera to make use of and absolutely no intention of letting a lack of available wrestlers get in the way of creating as much content as possible.

The solution was simple: masks, ridiculous characters and even more ridiculous acting.

Teh Gr8 Schitzu was portrayed by Corey Carver, later known as Valo, wearing a Great Sasuke mask, while Teh Gr8 Phuka-U was Jayyy underneath an Ultimo Dragon mask. The two were comedy characters to their core, complete with deliberately stupid performances and fake accents.

They weren’t the only alter egos created to fill out the shows. Hyogo Kantai, who had challenged Jayyy for the RWL Championship at Entertainmania, was also Corey Carver, this time underneath a Hayabusa mask.

It meant that, despite only having a relatively small group available that day, RWL could present something resembling a much larger roster.

Welcome to Watson’s Lounge

Death By Diamond Cutter opened with the first-ever edition of Watson’s Lounge, hosted by Adam Watson with Shawn O’ Mercy as his guest.

Predictably, the Lounge didn’t last particularly long before things fell apart, leading directly into a match between the two.

Mercy defeated Watson, but rather than calling it a day, he issued an open challenge.

He probably should have been more specific.

One Open Challenge, Two Opponents

The challenge was answered by both The Sentinel and “Cyanide” Danny Cooper, resulting in Shawn O’ Mercy suddenly finding himself against two opponents.

Late in the match, however, Sentinel attacked Cyanide.

For reasons that remain unclear even in hindsight, the referee responded to Sentinel attacking Cyanide by disqualifying Shawn O’ Mercy.

The finish made very little sense then, and time has done nothing to make it any clearer.

Somehow, this led to Teh Gr8 Schitzu emerging to challenge Cyanide to another match.

The Brothers Collide

Cyanide made extremely quick work of Schitzu, but Schitzu’s problems were only just beginning.

Immediately afterwards, Teh Gr8 Phuka-U appeared and hit his brother with a running shooting star press. Rather than simply taking advantage of an already beaten Schitzu, Phuka-U convinced the referee to officially start a match between the pair.

The bell rang.

The referee counted the pin.

And within seconds, it was over.

It marked the first match between Teh Gr8 Phuka-U and Teh Gr8 Schitzu in RWL history, beginning a sibling rivalry that would continue in various forms throughout the years that followed and, despite numerous encounters, never really reach a definitive conclusion.

Redemption for Carver?

With the chaos finally settling down, Corey Leigh Carver, later known as Valo, stepped into the ring against The Sentinel, also known as Flaming Chaos.

Carver had lost to Nixy Nix at Entertainmania, meaning he entered RWL’s second show still searching for his first victory of the recorded era.

Shoeless Aggression

The show concluded with the debut of one of RWL’s more unusual creations: the Shoeless Aggression Match.

The rules were simple.

There were no disqualifications… unless you used a shoe or boot in any way.

The inaugural match saw reigning RWL Champion Jayyy defend his championship against RWL International Champion Nixy Nix, putting RWL’s two champions against one another in the main event.

What began as a ridiculous stipulation would surprisingly not be a one-off. Shoeless Aggression would go on to become a semi-regular match type for Jayyy throughout his RWL career.

Two shows, one borrowed camera, a handful of wrestlers, several masks, an inexplicable disqualification and a wrestling match that lasted a matter of seconds. RWL’s recorded history was well and truly underway.
